*1.  Some sources give 1828 as the year of birth for Aline. However Aline's year of birth in the 1923 Stammbaum der Familie Bohnstedt book was originally typed in as "1929", but somebody crossed out this date and wrote in "1830".
*2.  A birth and baptism ("Geborne und Getaufte") record provided even more confusion.  In one record there are listings for both Friedrich Wilhelm Ottokar and Marie Louise Laura, on the same page.  This is strange, given that they were supposedly born several years apart.  This opens the question of when either of them were actually born.  Several other pages were found with listings for all these children.  They don't seem to be in chronological order.  But it appears that another, more recent, numbering system was superimposed on the tops of these pages, suggesting that they were found and catalogued without any understanding of their original chronology.  But even this explanation still does not explain why one child, Friedrich Wilhelm Ottokar, born in 1831, and another, Marie Louise Laura, born in 1836, would have originally been listed on the same page. (The 1939 Stammbaum also says Laura was born in 1936).  Documentation eventually emerged which indicated very clearly that Marie Louise Laura and Friedrich Wilhelm Ottokar were both born in 1831; Laura on Jan 6, and Ottokar on Nov 28.  In a birth registry which includes Marie Louise Laura and Friedrich Wilhelm Ottokar provided by Ancestry.com, frame 285 shows Carl Heinrich Heinrich Gumal Bohnstedt born December 1829. The next page (on frame 286) shows, at the top of the page, Maria Louise Laura Bohnstedt, born in January. Since these entries were in chronological order, and since we have documentation which establishes that Maria Louise Laura was born in January 1831, this entry was made in January 1831. This also indicates that there may have been no births entered during 1830. There is only one entry between Carl Heinrich Gumal Bohnstedt and Marie Louise Laura Bohnstedt. This could have been in 1830, but it's difficult to read.  Either way, it seems clear that Marie Louise Laura was born in January 1831. At the bottom of the same birth registry page appears Fredrich Wilhelm Ottokar (Bohnstedt), and the word "November". We know that Ottokar was born in November, and since his entry appears AFTER the entries for 1831, it is highly unlikely that he was born in 1829. At the top of the next page (in frame 287) there is a notation "1832", and the first entry has the month of January. It seems clear that Ottokar was born in November 1831.

*1.  Gottfried died from a cerebral hemorrhage while traveling to Germany.  Gottfried was already a naturalized American citizen when he died.
*2.  Some rrecords revealed the existence of "James Charlesballa Bohnstedt", and a relationship to Hans Bohnstedt.  For some time I was not certain of the origin and relationship of the child, James, to Hans Bohnstedt.  Recent access to additional documents has cleared up the matter.  As
Duane L. Bohnstedt originally discovered, Charlotte was married to Roy Acer Ballagh before she was married to Hans Bohnstedt.  James was the product of that marriage.  Hans was first married to Elsie Janssen in 1927. It appears that by 1939 the two were no longer married, as Elsie does not appear with her husband in the Mitglieder de Bohnstedt'schen Familien-Verbandes März 1938 ("1938 List"); Hans's wife is only listed in entry # 19 as "und Frau".  Elsie's petition for naturalization in 1937 still lists Hans as her spouse.  Unless Elsie falsified the petition she must have still been married to Hans up to at least 1937, but divorced sometime shortly after.  This also opens the possibility that this was a marriage of convenience for Elsie, for the purpose of gaining her naturalization.  Charlotte's first husband, Roy Acer Ballagh, died in 1945 when James was 12-13 years old. This was learned from a 1940 Los Angeles census showing Roy, Charlotte and James as a family, and James was 7 years old.  It's unclear exactly when James was adopted by Hans, but we do know that Hans and Charlotte married in 1953, when James was about 20.  Some documents and newspaper clippings mention James as Hans's "adopted son", but its unlikely that James consented to an adult adoption.  What is clear is that James was Roy Ballagh's son.  This means there is probably no Bohnsedt line from Hans Bohnstedt. As for Hans's first wife, Elsie: since we now know that Hans did  not marry Charlotte until 1953, it is possible that Hans may have still been married to Elsie in 1938 when the 1938 list was produced.  It's also possible that the originator of the document was uncertain of Hans's marital status.  What IS clear is that Hans appears in a 1940 census of Beverly Hills in 1940 by himself, suggesting that by 1940 he was divorced or separated from Elsie.
