Genealogy 3-1:
Gevensleben and Calvörde

The Descendants of Johann Matthäus Bohnstedt in Gevensleben and Calvörde Germany, and the first Bohnstedts in America

There is an additional table for Johann Christoph Andreas Bohnstedt in this section, even though we were not able to locate documentation that conclusively connects him to the rest of the Bohnstedts in Gevensleben. But given the rarity of the name in such a small village, we are certain that he was related to the larger family.

*1. Some records claim that Johann Gottlieb's year of birth was 1765, while others say that he was born in 1762.  So far I have not seen original documentation to verify either.
*2.
Different sources indicate different years of death for Gottliieb.  Based on the stated age at time of death on his grave marker (80 years, 5 months), Gottlieb would have been born in 1795.  However, a record of death for Gottlieb states that he was 79 years and 4 months old at his time of death, placing his year of birth at 1796.  It also seems that Gottlieb and Elizabeth returned home to Germany many years after their emigration to America, and returned in 1856.  A passenger list for this 1856 voyage which lists Gottlieb and Elizabeth at #7 and #8 states that Gottlieb was 60 years old. This also implies that Gottlieb was born in 1796, rather than 1795.  The information on the grave marker may be incorrect.
*3.
One source places Gottlieb and Elizabeth traveling to America in 1825, arriving at Baltimore Maryland.  However, a ship's passenger list shows Gottlieb and Elizabeth traveling from Hamburg to New York in 1856. If both sources are correct Gottlieb and his wife made two trips from Germany to America.
*4.
Anna Maria Elizabeth Danhauer was the sister of Julius Danhauer. Julius Danhauer was the father of Ernest Conrad Danhauer, who was married to Auguste Emilie Sophia Bohnstedt.  Emilie was the daughter of August Georg Wilhelm Ludwig Bohnstedt, who was the younger brother of Friedrich Wilhelm Gottlieb Bohnstedt.
*5. Original research by Marvin Bohnstedt, Duane Bohnstedt and Charles F. Bohnstedt claimed that Johann Christian Bohnstedt's second name was Georg Christian.  Church records found in Ancestry.com reveal that his middle names may actually have been Wilhelm Christian.  It's also possible that both were correct.

1. Of the five children known to have been born to this family, only two were sons.  Both of these sons died at an early age; Gottfried the year after he was born, and Carl the same year he was born.  Consequently the Bohnstedt family name did not continue with this family line.
