Johann Carl Christian "Charles" Bohnstedt I / (see 3-1-1000, Gevensleben... ↑ )

M, bn: 1800 Jun 25, Braunschweig army garrison / p: Farmer. Miller / i: Emigrated to America in 1848 with family aboard the brig "Pioneer", landing at Philadelphia. Settled first in Muskingum County, Ohio, and later, Olney, Illinois after 1854 / d: 1875 Sep 5, probably, Olney, Illinois / bd: Haven Hill Cemetery, Olney Illinois // m: 1829 May 3, to Anna Dorothea "Dora" "Dorothy" Fritze / bn: 1809 Feb 6, Meitzendorf, Germany / d: 1894 Feb 14, prob. Olney, Illinois / bd: Haven Hill Cemetery, Olney, Illinois

9. Johann Heinrich Christoph "Henry" (Bohnstedt) / M, bn: 1845 Dec 13, Jersleben, Saxony, Germany / s: U.S. Army, 136th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, Company "G", Civil War, 1864 / d: 1864 Aug 20, in military service, at Columbus, Kentucky / bd: 1864, Haven Hill Cemetery, Olney, Illinois
10. Wilhelm "William" (Bohnstedt) / M, bn: 1849, Brush Creek, Ohio / (see 3-3-7000 ↓ )
11. Ludwig "Lewis" | "Louis" (Bohnstedt) / M, bn: 1851, Brush Creek, Ohio *1 / (see
3-3-8000, Missouri... ↓ )
12. Baby Girl (Bohnstedt) / F, bn: 1851, (Ludwig's twin), Brush Creek, Ohio *2
13. Emilie (Bohnstedt) / F, bn: 1854, Ohio *3

*1. For decades we had believed that this child's name was "Ludewier".  However, a recent analysis of the available evidence has led us to conclude that his name was in fact "Ludwig"
*2. Only one record indicates that Ludwig Bohnstedt, born 1851, had a twin sibling. We assume that the child was probably stillborn because the child appears in no other records after that time.
*3. Emilie's name was recorded by parents Charles and Dorothea on their copy of the document from the Prussian government granting permission to emigrate.  Apart from that single hand-written name, Emilie appears in no census records or any other records, suggesting that she died young, or was even still-born.  Also, because the document is so difficult to read, the certainty of the name "Emilie" is also in question.

Johann Carl Christian "Charles" Bohnstedt II / (see 3-3-1000 ↑ )

M, bn: 1829 May 31, Jersleben, Germany / i: Emigrated to America in 1848 with parents / p: Farmer / d: 1915 Jun 6, Olney, Illinois / bd: Haven Hill Cemetery, Olney, Illinois // m: 1853, to Mary Ann Cappel / bn: 1835, Mar 3, Zanesville, Ohio / d: 1932, Mar 29, Olney Illinois / bd: Haven Hill Cemetery, Olney Illinois

Children:
1. Amelia (Bohnstedt) / F, bn: 1856, Olney, Illinois / (see 3-3-1002 ↓ )
2. Elizabeth Christine (Bohnstedt) / F, bn: 1858, Olney, Illinois / (see
3-3-1003)
3. Mary Ann (Bohnstedt) / F, bn: 1860, Olney, Illinois / d: 1881, prob. in or near Olney, Illinois / bd: Haven Hill Cemetery, Olney Illinois
4. Theodore "Dick" (Bohnstedt) / M, bn: 1862, Richland County, Illinois / (see
3-3-1005)
5. William Frederick (Bohnstedt) / M, bn: 1867, Olney, Illinois / (see
3-3-1100)
6. Sarah Margaret (Bohnstedt) / F, bn: 1869, Olney, Illinois / (see 3-3-1198 ↓ )
7. Minnie (Bohnstedt) / F, bn: 1871, Olney, Illinois / (see 3-3-1199 ↓ )
8. Katherine "Kate" (Bohnstedt) / F, bn: 1876, Olney, Illinois / (see 3-3-1200 ↓ )
9. Harry George (Bohnstedt) / M, bn: 1879, Nov 12, Olney, Illinois * 2,3 / p: Poulterer, laborer at a packing house / d: 1967, Illinois / bd: Haven Hill Cemetery, Olney Illinois (unmarked)

1. A 1930 census for Olney, Richland County Illinois (G53) listed Mary Ann Bohnstedt with daughter, Amelia, and Amelia's children, Ida May and Helen. Amelia's married surname was not listed.
*2. George H. is listed in birth records from the Richland County courthouse as the 12th child of Charles (Carl) C. Bohnstedt Jr. and Mary Cappel, born in 1879. This means that three other children were born to Charles and Mary that we have no knowledge of. We have no information on the names or dates of birth for these three children. Perhaps they were stillborn or died young. There are significant gaps between (1) Theodore (1862) and William Frederick (1867), (2) Minnie (1871) and Kate (1876), and (3) Kate (1876) and Harry George (1879).  It's possible those gaps account for children who died very young.  They may also account for three of the four children buried in Haven Hill Cemetery, for whom no information is available about their parentage.
*3. Harry Bohnstedt was listed in the 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930 federal census records of Richland County, Illinois, town of Olney. In the 1880 census (
G23) Harry is less than one year old, suggesting a year of birth of 1879. In the 1900 (G28) census Harry is listed with an age of 20 years, putting his year of birth at about 1879-1880. In the 1910 census (G10) Harry's age is listed as 37 years, putting his year of birth at about 1873. In the 1920 census (G42) Harry's age is 41 years, putting his year of birth about at 1879. In the 1930 census (G54) Harry is listed with the age of 45 years, putting his year of birth at about 1885. The reason for the inconsistencies is uncertain. However, 3 out of 5 records suggest a year of birth at about 1879, while the other two (1910 and 1930) do not agree with each other.
*4. A family bible was recovered and generously donated back to the Bohnstedt family by Erin Curry, an artist in Florida.  This bible seems to have been owned by Johann Carl Christian "Charles Jr." Bohnstedt and Mary Ann (Cappel) Bohnstedt.  It was printed in the early 1800's in German, and several names and dates were entered in the registry pages in the center of the bible.  Although interesting, it's usefulness as an accurate source is in question.  Although the dates usually match those recovered from other sources, they occasionally differ slightly.  In once case whoever was entering the names wrote in the date of birth for the mother, Mary Ann, wrote in "1823", but then "1835" (which is the correct date, verified from other sources) was penciled in beside it.

*1. A "Geneva Bohnstedt" was listed in the U.S. Social Security death indexes, born 1900 and died 1981. This is undoubtedly the same Geneva Smith who married Harry Lisle Bohnstedt.SS Death records state that she died in Ohio, but family oral history says she was buried in Washington state. This was resolved by a grave marker for Harry and Geneva Bohnstedt in Winlock Cemetery, in Winlock Washington, which give the years of birth and death for both (listed above).
*2. Harry's gravestone gives his year of death as 1953, but this may be incorrect; other records indicate 1954.

*3. Niles was Marjory's child from a previous relationship.  He was adopted by Robert in 1954.

Children:

1. Beulah F. (Bohnstedt) / F, bn: c.1919, Illinois (a) *4
m3:
2. JoAnn (Bohnstedt) / F, bn: 1935, Danville, Indiana / (see 3-3-1124 ↓ )

*1. One item in Ancestry.com gives Charles' middle name as "Ervin". However, the document which actually shows this has not yet been found.
*2. Some records show Charles having a year of birth of 1893, however, other records give his year of birth as 1894.
*3. Records indicate that Charles and Mabel were divorced by 1920, in which year Mabel married again to Edw. Alexander.
*4. It appears that Beulah was adopted by Charles during his first marriage to Charlotte; records show an adoption of Beulah by Charles and Charlotte.  It is unknown whether Beulah was adopted by both parents, or if Beulah was a child from Charlotte's previous relationship.
5. The marital sequence above is extarapolated from the following: (1) A marriage record from 1914 shows Charles Bohnstedt marrying Mabel Madden. (2) A 1930 census from Vermillion County, Illinois shows Charles married to someone named "Lottie" (last name unknown), with an adopted daughter, Beulah. (3) A 1930 census record from Vermillion County, Illinois (page 7B, and Page 8A) shows Marguerith Gray living with parents John and Mattie Thaden, and children Betty and Ralph under the surname "Gray", showing that Betty and Ralph were born before Marguerith's relationship to Charles Bohnstedt (4) A 1932 record from the "National Home For Disabled Soldiers" lists Marguerith as the wife of Charles Ervin Bohnstedt (5) A 1940 census for Vermillion County Illinois lists Marguerith ("Margrette") Bohnstedt living with her parents, John and Mattie Thaden. (6) Records which show Charles Ervin Bohnstedt's death in 1940.  Since the 1932 disabled record and the 1940 census record shows that Marguerith had the surname "Bohnstedt", and since JoAnn was born in 1935, it is a logical assumption that JoAnn was Charles' biological daughter.  But since the 1930 census record with Marguerith shows Betty and Ralph under the surname "Gray", it is a logical assumption that Betty and Ralph were NOT Charles' children.

*1. James Kelly Hull was a Bohnstedt descendant from Catherine Elisabeth Bohnstedt (3-3-1996).  James K. Hull's maternal grandmother was Catherine E. Bohnstedt, and Mary E. Bohnstedt's paternal grandfather was Johann Carl Christian Bohnstedt II, who was Catherine E. Bohnstedt's older brother.  Mary Elizabeth Bohnstedt and James K. Hull were second cousins, and their offspring were descended from Bohnstedts along two lines.
*2. The name of Carolyn Hull was derived from earlier research and might be the products of anecdote and personal memory.  So far it is unverified by a secondary source.

*1.  After Catherine's death in 1873 Johann Heinrich "Henry" Stadge married for a second time on 15 Dec 1873 in Richland County, Illinois to Mary (Knust) Fields and had children Simon Nimrod; Clara Louise; Amelia M.; Effie and Lillie May.
*2.
Charles Yelch married Grace Kuykendall, and Charles's sister, Pearl Yelch, married John William Kuykendall. Although I havent conclusively established the connection, Kuykendall is a very unusual name, and in the small towns of Charleston and Mattoon (each with populations of around 20,000) in Coles County, it's nearly impossible that two people with such an unusual last name were NOT related.
*3
.  James K. Hull's maternal grandmother was Catherine E. Bohnstedt, and Mary Elizabeth Bohnstedt's paternal grandfather was Johann Carl Christian Bohnstedt II, who was Catherine E. Bohnstedt's older brother.  Mary Elizabeth Bohnstedt and James K. Hull were second cousins, and their offspring were descended from Bohnstedts along two lines.

*1. Some records list Anna Catherine Sophie as Mary Sophie or Sophia Bohnstedt, but most other evidence seems to indicate that these are probably the same person.
*2. Although the surname of the father of Viola and Grace are unknown, it is said that both children later took the name of "Smith", Susan's second husband.
*3. Early census records and other records sometimes spelled this family's name as "Swartz".
