August Georg Wilhelm Ludwig Bohnstedt / (see 3-1-1000, Gevensleben... ↑ )

M, bn: 1801, Calvörde, Sachsen-Anhalt, Germany *1 / p: Master Baker / i: Emigrated to America in 1867 with Daughter, Emilie, sailing from Bremen aboard the 'Orpheus', and landing at New York in 1867. Settled at or near Zanesville, Muskingum County, Ohio / d: 1880, Jun 30, near Duncan Falls, Ohio / bd: Duncan Falls Cemetery, Wayne Township, Ohio // m: Louise Marie Marcodes

Children:
1. Wilhelmine Louise Eleonora "Sonia" (Bohnstedt) / F, bn: 1834, Germany / i: 1878, America / (see 3-4-1001 ↓ )
2. August (Bohnstedt) / M, bn: c.1837-1838, Germany / i: Emigrated to America, landed at New York, January, 1868 / (see

3. Friedrich Wilhelm Ludwig Andreas (Bohnstedt) / M, bn: 1844 Calvörde, Sachsen-Anhalt, Germany / i: America 1869 / (see 3-4-7000
)
4. Auguste Emilie Sophie (Bohnstedt) / F, bn: 1848, Neuhaldensleben, Sachsen-Anhalt, Germany / i: Immigrated to America with father in 1867 / (see
3-4-8000 ↓ )

*1. There is a wide discrepancy in the age of August G.W.L. Bohnstedt in some records which places his year of birth at or about 1801, and a ship's passenger list which lists his age in 1867 as 58 years, placing his year of birth at 1809. The cause of this discrepancy is unknown, but other evidence suggests that these are probably still the same person as the year of birth for the daughter, Emilie, matches in all records, and her year of birth is placed at or about 1848, and her age at the time of the voyage is 19 years old. The ship's passenger list which gives August's age as 58 in 1867 was taken from the World Wide Web, and it might be possible that an error was made when the information was transcribed from other sources.
*2. The only document we have found so far that connects August Georg Wilhelm Ludwig Bohnstedt and August Jr. is an 1870 federal census from Zanesville Ohio. This record shows four individuals with the last name of "Bonestedt".  The spelling of the last name is not too controversial as census takers often misspelled last names, especially if it was a foreign name, like German.  These four individuals are: "August", born about 1801-1802, a female named "Auguste", born about 1841-1842, a girl named "Mary", born about 1865-1866, and a boy, "Frederick", born about 1868-1869.  These dates match the dates of birth for the following individuals: August Georg Wilhelm Ludwig Bohnstedt, born about 1801, Mary Sophia Nieman-Muncie (August Jr's first wife), born about 1841, Mary, Sophia Nieman-Muncie's daughter from her first marriage, born about 1866, and Frederick W. Bohnstedt, August Jr. Bohnstedt's first child with Sophia, born about 1868. There are some unanswered questions about this. (1) if the second individual was Sophia, why was she referred to as "Auguste" (Augusta). (2) Where was August Jr. when the census was taken? (3) Why was Sophia's other daughter, "Nannie" not enumerated with the rest of the household?  Despite these anomalies we believe these people were correctly identified as August Sr., Sophia Muncie, Sophia's daughter Mary, and August Jr's son Frederick. Zanesville was a small town (and still is), and there are only so many Bohnstedts in small towns.  We do know that August Bohnstedt Sr.'s youngest daughter was named Auguste Emilie Sophia, but the age difference between August's daughter, born 1848, and the individual listed in the census, born about 1841-1842 is substantial. It is possible that the census taker could have made an error in recording, perhaps if the information was given by her father, who was about 79 years old at the time, and may have not remembered Emilie's age correctly.  That is only theory.

*1. Two ship's records list someone named "August Bohnstedt" traveling to America in 1868 with his wife, Alexandrine, and his daughter Emily.  August's occupation is listed as "Baker". This is interesting because August Georg Wilhelm Ludwig Bohnstedt's occupation in another ship's record was listed as "Master Baker", suggesting another father-son link between the two men.  The records also mention a baby boy who was born at sea on 31 December, 1867 to August and Alexandrine, and died four days later on 4 January.  In these records August's age is 31 years, which puts his year of birth at about 1837-1838.  This is very likely the same "August Bohnstedt" as the one we believe to be the son of August Georg Wilhelm Ludwig Bohnstedt. If so, what happened to Alexandrine, Emily, and the baby?  Clearly, the baby boy died at sea. If the death was the result of difficulties during childbirth, then Alexandrine may have died shortly after as well.  This would explain why August remarried when he landed in Ohio, this time to Mary Sophia Nieman-Muncie, herself a widow.  The final question is; what happened to daughter Emily?  She does not appear in in census records, and so far her fate remains a mystery.  It's possible that she may have died at an early age as well, but no record of her death has been found.
*2. Children Mary Anna and Nancy ("Nanny") were listed in an 1880 census records in this household with the last name of Bohnstedt, but they were Sophia's children from her previous marriage to John Muncie. The census records place their years of birth (due to their ages) at about 1866 and 1867, while a marriage record for August and Sophia says they were married in 1868. Also, according to verbal family tradition Amelia and the other younger children did have two older half-sisters from their mother's previous marriage, and one of the older half-sisters was named Mary.
*3. Records indicate that Frederick was born on December 3, 1868, but his mother, Sophia, was married to August Bohnstedt April 25, 1868, just slightly over 7 months before Frederick was born. August landed in New York in January 1868. If Frederick was August’s son August would have had to somehow meet Sophia (who would have had to already be divorced or widowed) in March 1868, engage in an intimate relationship with Sophia, at which time Frederick would have been conceived, and then married Sophia a few weeks later. Although this is certainly not outside the realm of possibility, it would have been a little more unusual during that time period. This opens the possibility that Frederick was Sophia’s child from her previous marriage. Unfortunately I have no information on Sophia’s marriage to Mister Muncey (whoever he was), so the question of who was Frederick Bohnstedt’s father remains unanswered.
*4. A marriage record for Amelia Bohnstedt implies that her date of birth (based on her age) was in 1876.  However, records in the "Ohio Birth and Christening Index" specifically give her date of birth as Nov 14, 1874, followed by a christening date of May 24, 1875, making the 1874 date more likely. The reason for the discrepancy is unknown.
*5. Different City directories from different locations have consistently listed Louis's middle initial as "C".  However, no government record or document has been recovered that confirms this.  Also, Louis appears listed in various directories and documents with different nicknames including "Lou", "Lew", and "Lue", including his draft registration card.
*6. Different records give different birth dates for Lewis. A social security record, as well as Ohio, Births and Christenings Index, 1774-1973, supposedly gives his birth date as November 29, 1878.  But a draft registration record gives his birth date as September 14, 1879.
*7. Different records place Albert's year of birth, alternately, in 1880 and 1881.

*1. An 1880 census record (source G11) listed "Charlie" Bohnstedt as 7 years old, which means he was born about 1873. A 1902 marriage record for Charles said he was 27 years old in 1901 which would put his year of birth in 1874, therefore he was born about 1873 or 1874. However, the record of his second marriage said he was 36 years old in 1913 which would bring his year of birth to 1877. Since the other two records agree, more or less on 1873-1874, the second marriage record was probably recorded in error.
*2. Another record listed Charles' place of birth as Barnesville, Ohio, which is about 30 miles east of Zanesville. "Barnesville" may have been recorded in error.

*1. Geraldine Dewitt married a second time to Frederick Hootman.  In March 1946 6-year old Milton was adopted by Frederick Hootman in Coshocton County, Ohio, and Milton's last name was changed to "Hootman".  The name "Milton Lee Hootman" later appears in Ohio voter registrations and other documents.  Evidence of L.D. Bohnstedt's relationship to Milton Lee Bohnstedt and his mother, Geraldine Rose DeWitt is found in (a) April 1939 newspaper notice announcing the wedding of Lawrence Dayle Bohnstedt to Geraldine Rose DeWitt, (b) Febraury 1940 newspaper notice announcing the birth of a boy to "Mrs. Dayle Bohnstedt", (c) 1940 census of Newcomerstown, Ohio, showing Geraldine Bohnstedt and son, Milton Bohnstedt, living with father Clarence DeWitt, (d) August 1941 newspaper notice announcing the divorce of Geraldine Rose Bohnstedt from Lawrence Bohnstedt, (e) March 1946 newspaper notice announcing the adoption by Frederick Hootman of Milton Lee Bohnstedt, son of Geraldine Hootman.

Margaret's social security record gives her year of birth as 1890. However, other documents give her year of birth as 1886. 1890 may simply be there year that she recieved her social security number.
