The grave marker for Leopold's parents; Wilhelm Eduardovich and Maria Ivanovna has two additional inscriptions. The name at the very bottom lists only a last name "Bonshtedt" (Bohnstedt) but this is most likely their youngest son, Leopold because the years of birth and death on the marker match what we know of Leopold's years of birth and death. The inscription, translated phonetically from Russian, reads "Bonshtedt" (Bohnstedt), Lev Vasilievich, 29 March 1908 - 1990 26 November". The dates of birth and death match the years of birth and death that we know of for Leopold Bohnstedt. We know the middle names given for Leopold's older siblings follow Russian naming conventions in which the middle names of the children are usually given to honor the father. Maria's and Georgy's middle names are "Vasilievna" (feminine form) and "Vasilievich" (masculine), and the Russian form of Wilhelm is "Vasili". The middle name of the inscription, translated from Russian alphabet, reads "Vasilievich", matching that of his brother and sister. The only part of this which is a little bit puzzling is the first name, which, translated phonetically, says "Lev". According to internet sources "Lev" is Russian for "Lion". And given that "Leo" is Latin for Lion this is likely the source for the name "Lev" which appears on the inscription; Leopold - Leo - Lion - Lev. Also, Family anecdotal information says that Leopold was an officer in the Soviet Army, in a tank/armored unit. Thus, he may also have had the nickname "Lev - Leo" for "Lion" because of his military service.
*2. The identification of the name inscription in the middle of the marker; "Lyutsiya Konstantinovna (Bohnstedt)" is not entirely resolved and is someone previously unknown to us. However, given that the inscription on the bottom was referring to Leopold Bohnstedt, "Lyutsiya" could very well have been his wife, therefore the reason her name appears above Leopold's would have been because she died in 1972, eighteen years before Leopold.See Also:
